Funny Cars in the Fog
The California Independent Funny Car Association made their first appearance ever in Humbolt County. Thanks to Lithia Ram & Dodge of Eureka the CIFCA funny cars were able to make the haul to Samoa Dragstrip for race number 3 of their 5 race series presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports. The event also included Chris Morel in his nitro burning, Little City Cuda. Greg Means also joined the show with his blown, small block chevy, front engine, nostalgia dragster. As well as local racer Kaycee Mela, in her Injected, alcohol burning, ground pounding, rear engine dragster.
The CIFCA Funny Cars ran a modified Chicago style event with two qualifying rounds and one final. The weather was near perfect with the temperature in the mid 70’s and sunny skies along Pacific Coast. However the track conditions were a little tricky as the cool breeze from ocean was blowing sand on to the race surface. Maher and Trimp lined up in the first qualifying session. Maher cut a solid .027 light before getting out of the groove. Maher back pedaled before crossing the center line and taking out the 1/8 mile cone. Trimp went on to run a solid 7.65 which was good enough for the System One #1 Qualifier Award. Mike Troxel went a little to quick on first pass running a 7.20 on the 7.50 index and on his second pass he got a little out of shape coasting to a 7.95 and placing him in the #2 spot. Shaun Bryan made his 2nd appearance of the year while running a New Century Block in his 89’ Firenza out of Windsor, CA. He qualified 3rd taking home the Aeromotive Fuel System revolving qualifier award. Maher and Kirchenman struggled to make full runs placing 4th and 5th respectably. Troxel took home the Mike’s Transmission Burnout Contest in the final round of qualifying & Johnny Kirchenman claimed the Control Cables Longest tow award coming all the way from Lodi, CA.
The final round was set between the Happy Hour Corvette piloted by Tony Trimp and the No More Alimony Trans Am driven by Mike Troxel. Trimp out of the gate first with .006 light taking home the Enderle Fuel Injection & Wayne Lederer Photography quick reaction time award before getting inches from the wall and forcing to lift. Troxel caught Trimp about 900ft before lifting and coasting to the stripe with a solid 7.56. Troxel’s first win of 2018 season and moving up to the #3 spot in the Good Vibrations Motorsports point series. Troxel also grabbed the SCE Bounty Hunter award for taking out the #1 Qualifier. Special thanks to Vinny Lombardi and the team at Lithia Dodge & Ram of Eureka for hosting the California Independent Funny Car Association at Samoa Dragstrip. Thank you to to every at the track for all their hard work and making sure everything went smoothly.
