The Champ continues to dominate in Tucson
CIFCA Final Race of 2017 Submitted by: James Maher October 5, 2017
The California Independent Funny Car Association (CIFCA) held their final race of their 2017 season at Tucson Dragway during the Fall Fuel Extravaganza presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports. This event featured four CIFCA funny cars and they put on a killer show.
Tony Trimp, who clinched the CIFCA Championship by winning the Governor's Cup, was the System 1 Number One Qualifier as he put up a stout 7.530 on the 7.50 index. Darrin Hamby was second with a 7.57 while James Maher finished third on a 7.60 pass. Jim Maroney was the Aeromotive Revolving Qualifier by slipping into the number four spot; he also won the Mike’s Transmission’s Burnout Contest during the final qualifying session.
James Maher and Tony Trimp found themselves against each other in the first round for the third time in 2017. Maher defeated Trimp at the Night of Fire and Trimp defeated Maher at the Governors Cup. We expected a close race and that is exactly what we got. Trimp put up a 7.578 to Maher's slightly quicker but losing 7.577. The Good Vibrations Motorsports quick reaction time was won by Trimp's impressive .007 light over Maher's .071.
On the flip side of the ladder Hamby with his 1997 Firbird powered by 489 BBC Chevy met up against Jim Maroney who drove the Back in Black Camaro with a 426 Hemi. Hamby pushed the tree a little to hard and went .006 red which handed the win over to Maroney who spun the tires at the hit. Maroney did a nice job back pedalling and ended up running a 7.824 at 187.63mph.
To finish off the event it was Maroney against Trimp, who was driving Harvey William’s 1986 “Happy Hour” Corvette to it's fourth final round of the year. Maroney struck the tires at the hit but had a very good back pedal was able to make up ground on the top end. Trimp cut a respectable .062 light and pulled off a 7.676 at 151.78mph to Maroney's .080 light and a 7.662 at 194.18mph! The margin of victory at the stripe .004 in favor of Trimp. The Fall Fuel Extravaganza presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports was won by Trimp. He also cleaned house by taking home the Control Cables Longest Tow Award, the SCE Gasket Bounty Hunter Award, the System One #1 Qualifier, the Good Vibrations Motorsports Quick Reaction time Award, Total Seal Piston Rings Bonus and John Hale's Best of the Texas Barbecue Sauce!
